Worship 103 • Chanting the Daily Office as Spiritual Practice

Winter Quarter 2009
Class Time: 1:10 - 4:00 p.m.
Instructor: Mr. Joseph Anderson

This class will meet at the Thomsen Chapel of Saint Mark’s Cathedral, 1245 10th Avenue E., Seattle, WA 98102

The core of this four-week session will be learning to sing the services of Vespers and Compline in the Gregorian chant tradition. We will use this experience as a jumping-off point to explore the spirituality of communal singing, the roots of chant in Early Christian desert and monastic spirituality, and the ways chant has been adopted and transformed in the Anglican tradition. Throughout our focus will be on the practicalities of developing and sustaining a chanting practice, whether individually or in community.
