The Christian Story 106 • Saints, Scholars, and Inquisitors: The Middle Ages

Fall Quarter 2008
Class Time: CANCELLED
Instructor: The Rev. Alan Mack

How did society, climate, and pestilence shape Christendom in medieval Europe and for the Byzantine Romans. How did Christian leaders take a patchwork of barbarian tribes (some Christian, most not) and combine them with the dying embers of the (Western) Roman Empire to form the basis of modern European civilization? What methods did they use to evangelize the pagans? Would their methods work today? Did they hunt and burn witches and heretics? What was their concept of church vs. state? These and other questions will be discussed in this course.
